Is Your Logo Outdated?

by Tim H.

Let’s face it, people will always judge a book by its cover. It’s just human nature. This is why it is so vitally important that your logo visually represents your company and your brand in a way that is professional, modern and unique. In today’s digital marketing climate, sometimes all we have is a matter of seconds to create a good first impression with a potential customer. One crucial way your company is able to put it’s best foot forward is by having a modern and attractive logo and visual brand identity.

Your company’s logo and visual branding is what represents your company at the tip of the iceberg. Before the customer ever has any sort of interaction with your company and is able to see what it is like beneath the surface, they see a logo that showcases the character and essence of your brand. A quick glance at your logo can give an individual the impression that your organization is modern and professional or that it is outdated and amateur. So it is important to consider periodically if your company’s logo has become outdated, and no longer represents your brand in a compelling way.

How Often Should I Update My Logo?

A good rule of thumb is to at least consider updating your logo once every five years. Over time, trends and tastes will change. This can affect perceptions of your logo. What was once modern and compelling can lose its power over time. Not only do trends change, but your company will grow and change. It will have to in order to survive. So eventually what was once a fitting representation of your brand, will no-longer be. This is why re-branding your company can be necessary at times.

Here at, we recently decided to re-brand our company with a new logo and website because our company has been growing and we recognized that there was room for improvement in our visual brand identity. We wanted to update our brand, but we didn’t want to lose any sense of recognition that our clients had with our existing brand. So we decided to refine our image by updating the logo and website, while still maintaining the same name, colors and tag-line. We believe that these subtle yet profound changes have made our visual brand identity much more effective and compelling.

What Makes a Logo Effective & Compelling?

There are 5 key traits that make an effective logo. First of all, It must be simple so that it is easy to understand quickly. Secondly, it must be timeless so that it can transcend current fads and the test of time. Thirdly, it must be versatile so that it will be readable and look great in different sizes, background colors and applications, such as your business cards, signage and websites. Fourthly, your logo must be appropriate, in the sense that the style of the fonts, color and graphics evoke an accurate sense of the kind of company and industry that you are.  And most importantly of all, it must be memorable so that it is easily recognizable as your unique visual identity.
