3 Digital Marketing Essentials For Weathering A Downturn

I’ve always been an optimist. A lifelong “glass half full” kind of person. So talking about a possible downturn in the economy, or even worse, the “R-word,” (a recession), doesn’t come naturally to me.

One of the most successful investors of our time, Warren Buffett is famous for saying, “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.”

Whether or not the economy is headed for a downturn, it never hurts to be prepared. If the tide goes out, I’d rather not get caught swimming naked.

In good times and bad, these three digital marketing essentials can help drive success in your business.

Essential #1 – A Solid Website

When it comes to your businesses online presence, your website is the one thing you have nearly 100% control over. You decide the look and feel, colors, functionality, and what it says about your business.

How many times has Facebook and Google changed the way business profiles or business pages look and function in the past five years? Heck, Google can’t even decide what to call their business offering, most recently settling on “Google Business Profile” (GBP for short).

Your business needs a solid website. Within 10 seconds of landing on your website, a visitor must be able to figure out:

  • What service does your company sell and what are the benefits?
  • Why should they buy from your business (and not your competitor)?
  • How to buy from your business (i.e. how to get started)?

If you’re not sure about your website, show a friend or family member your website, then ask them if they can answer each of these questions. If they struggle, then your website needs to be fixed.

Essential #2 – Positive Online Reviews

When one of your happy customers refers your business to a friend, the first thing that friend will do is google the name of your business and see your online reviews.

When times are tough, potential customers are even more selective about the company’s they want to work with. If your business has less than a 4-star rating, attracting new customers is going to be hard.

Essential #3 – Regular Email Marketing Campaigns (a.k.a. Newsletters)

If you’re reading this article, there’s a good chance you heard about it from our weekly email newsletter.

Email campaigns provide the highest Return On Investment (ROI) of any digital marketing strategy, yet many businesses don’t take advantage of them.

Email campaigns are a simple and effective way to communicate with your current customers, past customers, and potential customers.

We have found an easy way to get out regular email campaigns. We produce at least one new piece of content each week. A piece of content can be a blog post, podcast, or video. Then we use that as the basis of our weekly email campaigns. We also have the new piece of content posted to our website and posted to social media as well.
